On the night between 24th and 25th April 2019, a new MangAir DPS system together with the corresponding ARTAS system was put into use by BHANSA. The introduction of MangAir DPS system was carried out according to a precisely defined transition plan and was monitored by a BHDCA (Bosnia and Herzegovina Directorate of Civil Aviation) inspector. INDRA Sistemas manufacturer's experts, from Spain, were also at our disposal.
The system is used for the needs of Bosnia and Herzegovina Area Control Centre (BHACC), and both of its units (ATCU I Sarajevo and ATCU II Banja Luka) and for Approach and Aerodrome Control Unit Sarajevo.
In this way, the quality of air traffic service for air traffic users was improved, with the maximum air traffic safety level. Likewise, another important activity was accomplished in order to achieve BHANSA's highest goal of assuming responsibility, planned for 5 December 2019, for providing air navigation services in the entire Bosnia and Herzegovina airspace from the service providers from the neighbouring countries.
MangAir DPS system has been designed according to BHANSA's needs and requirements. Controllers' working positions enable the provision of radar air traffic control and they are equipped with situation displays. In MangAir DPS system, the data from all sensors has been processed by the ARTAS system in order to ensure a reliable and continuously updated display of the entire airspace under the BHANSA's jurisdiction.
This system enables air traffic control officers to use the latest safety nets with STCA (Short-term Conflict Alert), APW (Area Proximity Warning) and MSAW (Minimum Safe Altitude Warning) functions.
Likewise, MangAir gives controllers a warning about detection and notification of probable loss of separation of two aircraft (MTCD – Medium-Term Conflict Detection).
In accordance with applicable regulations, the ATCO/system interaction is archived on the subsystem for data communication. System management and monitoring are being carried out in appropriate positions situated in technical and area control centres in ATCU I and ATCU II.
The new DPS system has enhanced the value of the so called Mode S, which provides ATCOs with more precise data about each aircraft. In addition, MangAir operates within SECSI FRA (Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Montenegro airspace) without the use of intermediate waypoints.
From the aspect of the radar approach control Sarajevo, MangAir shall enable the so called stripless system without the use of strips in a working position.
The introduction of the same system in Banja Luka and the upgrade of the existing VHF/UHF system shall follow the already implemented voice communication system in Sarajevo, which shall additionally enhance the quality and safety of our service.
