Approach and Airport Air Traffic Control Unit in Mostar was visited by the participants of the air traffic control workshop as part of the STEAM Team* program of the American Corner of Mostar, under the leadership of Mrs. Inga Kotlo, on 25th March 2023.
The workshops were held at the end of 2022 and were aimed at giving the youth of the city of Mostar a closer look at explaining the job of an air traffic controller, what are the challenges, advantages, necessary qualifications and skills, how air traffic control was created, and how it evolved into today's form.
The workshop leader Nives Buzaljko, along with a presentation with pictures and explanations, as well as certain props (maps, comics, strip holders, etc.), tried to answer and clarify general questions such as what exactly the controllers do, what types of air traffic control exist (aerodrome/tower, approach radar, approach procedural, area) what are their tools and means of work, what services exist in ATSs and Air Traffic Control Centers, at Mostar Airport, how important teamwork is, how stressful the job of an air traffic controller actually is.
It was interesting for the participants to hear about the specifics of the aviation alphabet, as well as the general aviation phraseology that controllers and pilots use on a daily basis.
One of the parts of the workshop was certainly the rigorous training for air traffic controllers, as well as the previous selection process that candidates must go through.
The visit to Tower and all services within Aerodrome and Approach Air Traffic Control Unit in Mostar gave the participants an insight into the specifics of the work of all services on site, as a practical continuation of the held workshops.
Colleagues Zoran and Sandra from the Pre-Flight Information Office, colleague Zdenko from the Met Office, as well as colleague Boris from the Department of Aeronautical Engineering explained to the participants exactly what the employees of these services do, and colleague Nives added context for or the connection of all services with air traffic control. They were welcomed in the dome of the tower by their colleagues Josip and Amelia, and together with their colleague Nives showed the working positions, work tools, described the jobs, and answered all the visitors' curious questions, for which they were very thankful for.
Special thanks to the Office of the Director of BHANSA, which approved and supported both the workshops and the visit of the participants to Aerodrome and Approach Air Traffic Control Unit in Mostar.
